The Buy Check Archive

The manufacturer already told you
which parts will fail first

It is in the warranty, the spec sheet and the recall record — published, free, and almost never read. Three volumes that teach you to read them before you pay.

Three Volumes. One Complete Archive.

Volumes I and II are available on their own — or get all three, including the vault-exclusive Volume III, in the Complete Archive.

VOLUME I The Buy Check Method The method

The Buy Check Method

The twenty minutes of research that works on any product, in any category, in any year.

56 pages · 30 field notes across 6 parts · 6 schematic diagrams · pre-purchase check · buying calendar · printable checklist

  • Find out who actually built it — shared platforms mean the premium badge and the mid-tier badge often come off the same line, with the same control board.
  • Price year two before you buy — the headline warranty number usually covers the part least likely to fail, and labour is yours from month thirteen.
  • Turn the kWh label into dollars — 650 kWh against 400 kWh is a $510 gap over twelve years, more than the price difference between most models.

VOLUME II The Don't-Buy Handbook By category

The Don't-Buy Handbook

What to skip and what to buy instead, from fridges and TVs to chainsaws and power stations.

58 pages · 32 field notes across 5 parts · 8 schematic diagrams · category quick index · in-store check · seasonal calendar

  • The fridge feature everyone wants — the in-door dispenser adds six parts to the door, and it is the one technicians get called out for most.
  • Why your HDR sticker does nothing — almost every TV accepts HDR; far fewer have the brightness to show it, and the logo does not tell you which.
  • The surge that stops your fridge — a compressor can ask for close to a thousand watts at startup, which is why power stations that "run" it still fail to start it.

You do not need to buy the volumes separately — all three are delivered together, instantly.

  • Rank any product by design, not brand — brand lists go stale in a year; a ranking built on failure points does not.
  • Buy used without inheriting the problem — eleven checks, including the 24-hour fridge test, the washer spin test and how to decode a build date.
  • Get your money back — document the failure, climb the escalation ladder, and use the implied warranty and card dispute rules most owners never reach.

Every product comes with two sets of information

The first is designed to sell it: the box, the product page, the sale banner, the reviews written on delivery day. The second is designed to protect the company that made it: the warranty, the spec sheet, the installation guide, the recall record.

The first set is loud and everywhere. The second is quiet, technical, usually free, and often legally required to be available to you before you buy. It is also where the answers are — who really built it, which parts the manufacturer expects to fail, what it costs to run, and whether anyone near you can fix it.

This archive is about the second set. Not a list of brands to avoid, because brands change hands and factories. A method that still works in ten years, applied across every category we cover on the channel.

What one wrong purchase costs

Every figure on the left is taken from a field note in these books. The archive costs less than any single one of them.

What getting it wrong costs

Typical US repair and replacement amounts

Door dispenser repair, out of warranty$150–$400
Service call in year two, parts-only coverage$150–$400
Sealed-system repair on a neglected fridge$400–$1,000
Replacing an appliance that died early$900–$2,000
Emergency purchase, bought the day it broke+20–40%
Protection plan you already had through your card10–25%
One of these, once, and the archive has paid for itself several times over.

What the archive costs

One payment, keep the files

Volume I — The Buy Check Method$27
Volume II — The Don't-Buy Handbook$47
The Complete Archive, all three volumes$97
The method does not expire. Brands change owners and factories, but every product still has a warranty, a spec sheet, a recall record and a parts diagram. You learn to read them once and use it on every purchase you make from here on.
III

What changes once you have read it

The same five situations, before and after.

SituationBeforeAfter
Comparing two modelsCompare brand reputations and the feature listCheck the parent company, the shared platform and the price of the two parts most likely to fail
Reading a warrantySee "10-year warranty" on the box and feel coveredFind the shortest term, which covers what actually breaks, and price what year two costs you
Running costsCompare the price tagsMultiply the kWh on the label by your own rate and add twelve years of electricity to the comparison
Buying used or open-boxHope it works and that the seller was honestDecode the build date, check whether the warranty transfers, and run the category test before paying
A claim gets refusedAccept the first answer on the phoneDocument, get a reference number, escalate in order, and use the protections you already have
IV

Built from the documents, not from listicles

Where the content in these books actually comes from.

Manufacturer documentation

Warranty terms, specification sheets, installation guides, owner's manuals and parts diagrams — the documents companies publish and buyers skip.

Public safety records

Recall databases, consumer incident reports and the safety standards named on product labels, so you can check a claim rather than take it on trust.

Consumer protection rules

Written US warranty law, implied warranties and card dispute rights — the protections most owners never use because nobody told them they existed.

Every field note follows the same shape: why it matters, what to do, a non-obvious refinement, and what it saves you.

Coverage · Field Note

Parts versus labor is the line that decides who pays

A warranty that covers the part but not the technician can still cost you hundreds.

Many appliance warranties are structured in layers: one year of parts and labor on the whole product, followed by longer coverage on a few components that is parts only. Parts-only means the manufacturer ships the replacement but you pay for the diagnosis, the service call and the hours of work. On sealed refrigeration systems or motors, that labor can easily exceed the value of the part itself.

When you compare warranties, convert them into one question: in year two, if the most likely failure happens, what do I pay? For a parts-and-labor term the answer may be nothing. For parts-only, add a typical service call of $100–$200 plus labor. For no coverage, add the part too.

What it saves you: a parts-and-labor year two versus parts-only can be worth $150–$400 on a single repair.

Common Questions

Everything worth knowing before you order

Does the Complete Archive ($97) really include all three books?+

Yes — the Archive is all three volumes in one purchase. You get Volume I (The Buy Check Method), Volume II (The Don't-Buy Handbook) and the archive-exclusive Volume III (The Insider's Vault), delivered together instantly. If you buy the Archive, you do not need the individual volumes as well — you would be paying twice for the same books.

Can I buy Volume III on its own?+

No. The Insider's Vault is included only in the Complete Archive and is not sold separately. It assumes you have the method from Volume I and the category knowledge from Volume II, which is why it only exists as part of the set.

Is this just a list of brands to avoid?+

No, and deliberately so. Brands change owners, factories and component suppliers, so a list of good and bad brands is out of date within a few years. The archive teaches you to read the documents every product has — the warranty, the spec sheet, the recall record, the parts diagram — so you can evaluate any model, from any brand, in any year. Where companies are named, it is to show how ownership and shared platforms work, not to rank them.

Which categories does it actually cover?+

Volume I works for anything you buy. Volume II covers refrigerators, ovens and cooktops, washers, mattresses, recliners and sofas, TVs, mowers, chainsaws, generators, portable power stations and solar. Volume III adds reliability rankings for those categories plus used-buy tests for fridges, washers, mowers, chainsaws, generators, power stations and TVs.

Is this US-specific?+

Partly. The method, the specifications and the maintenance work anywhere. The consumer-protection sections — warranty law, recall databases, card disputes, small claims — are written for US readers, and prices are in US dollars. Readers elsewhere will still get full value from Volumes I and II, and from most of Volume III, but should check their own national rules in place of the US ones.

What if I want a refund?+

30 days, no questions asked. Email vantsantk@gmail.com and you get a full refund — and you keep the files. That applies to a single volume or the Complete Archive.

What format are the books in? How do I get them?+

All volumes are PDFs, downloadable immediately after purchase. Read them on any device or print them — several pages, including the checklists, the claim log and the replacement plan, are designed to be printed. No subscription, no app. Once you have the files, they are yours.

Read the documents. Then buy.
